The name 'macaroon' actually comes from the Italian word maccarone meaning paste. But since it has been created, the original word has now been changed to macaroon by the English and macaron by the French. This word is another concept from ammaccare which means crush or beat. Macaroons have suprisingly been around since the 9th century and have appeared in recipe books since as early as 1725.
